HopeSpring’s Reiki Programs

Healing Restoring Balance and Calm: The Benefits of Reiki for Those Affected by Cancer Cancer affects not just the body, but the mind and spirit. At HopeSpring, we understand that healing is most effective when it addresses the whole person; body, mind, and soul. That’s why we offer Reiki, a gentle, energy-based therapy designed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall well-being for those navigating the cancer journey. What Is Reiki? Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”) is a Japanese healing practice that channels life-force energy through the hands of a trained practitioner. By gently placing hands on or near the body, Reiki helps restore energy balance, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal and encouraging deep relaxation. Unlike massage, Reiki is non-invasive and can be adapted for individuals at any stage of treatment or recovery.   Benefits of Reiki in Relation to Cancer 1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety Cancer can create high levels of emotional and physical stress. Reiki activates the body’s relaxation response, helping lower stress hormones, calm the nervous system, and promote a sense of inner peace. 2. Supports Symptom Management Reiki can help alleviate discomfort, tension, and fatigue associated with cancer treatments. By encouraging the body to relax deeply, participants often report feeling relief from side effects like pain, nausea, and general discomfort. 3. Enhances Emotional Well-Being The gentle, mindful touch of Reiki encourages participants to release emotional tension and find balance. Many people experience reduced anxiety, improved mood, and a greater sense of calm and acceptance. 4. Promotes Mind–Body Connection Reiki fosters awareness of the body and its needs, helping participants feel more connected and in tune with their own healing process. This awareness empowers individuals to engage actively in self-care. 5. Supports Overall Quality of Life Studies and participant feedback indicate that Reiki can enhance overall quality of life for people living with cancer. By reducing stress, easing discomfort, and promoting relaxation, Reiki allows individuals to approach each day with renewed energy and hope.   Finding Hope Through Reiki Our Reiki Programs reflect HopeSpring’s mission to provide support to anyone affected by cancer. We provide a safe, supportive environment where individuals affected by cancer can experience calm, comfort, and balance, alongside others who understand their journey.

HopeSpring’s Massage Therapy Program

Healing Through Touch: The Benefits of Massage Therapy at HopeSpring   At HopeSpring, our mission is to support anyone affected by cancer. We know that healing doesn’t only happen through treatments, it happens through care that addresses the body, mind, and spirit. Our Massage Therapy Program, offered free at Conestoga College’s Doon Campus, embodies this holistic approach by creating a nurturing environment for cancer survivors, caregivers, families, and kids in our local community. What Is HopeSpring’s Massage Therapy Program? In partnership with Conestoga College, HopeSpring offers free 60-minute massage therapy sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the TSB Building on the Doon Campus. These healing sessions are open to anyone in our cancer community, welcoming cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones. Appointments are available in four time slots each day, with free parking available upon check-in as a HopeSpring member.   Why Massage Therapy Matters: The Benefits Backed by Science 1. Relieves Pain and Physical Discomfort A meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials involving 1,000 patients showed that massage therapy significantly reduces cancer-related pain; including perioperative pain and discomfort linked to various cancers, especially when sessions last 10–30 minutes over at least one week (PMC, 2023). Additional evidence highlights its impact on surgery-related pain, where foot reflexology and hand acupressure provided notable relief (PubMed, 2015)  2. Reduces Symptom Severity Across the Board At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, a three-year study involving 1,290 patients reported nearly 50% reductions in symptoms like pain, fatigue, stress, anxiety, nausea, and depression following massage sessions, often with benefits lasting up to 48 hours (PubMed, 2004). Similarly, a review of 16 trials found massage offers safe and effective relief for pain, fatigue, and anxiety in patients with cancer, with minimal adverse effects (ONS, 2025). 3. Eases Lymphedema and Neuropathy Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a specialized light massage, has shown positive effects in reducing swelling and discomfort associated with lymphedema, particularly in individuals treated for breast cancer (AMTA, 2025) Oncology massage has also helped relieve chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy symptoms, with 88% of participants in a 2022 study reporting improvement after receiving treatment three times a week (AMTA, 2025). 4. Supports Emotional Well-Being and Mind–Body Balance Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system (our “rest and digest” response), promoting release of calming hormones like serotonin and endorphins while reducing stress hormones such as cortisol (TIME, 2022). Complementary therapies including massage, have been shown to enhance coping skills and quality of life for people undergoing cancer treatment (TIME, 2022). 5. Integrated, Empowering Care Guidelines from the Society for Integrative Oncology recommend massage therapy as part of a multimodal approach to manage pain, anxiety, fatigue, and mood disturbances, especially in breast, lung, and lung-cancer survivors with Grade B evidence supporting its use (NCCIH, 2018). Massage empowers participants to feel a sense of control, self-care, and comfort during a difficult journey; something deeply aligned with HopeSpring’s ethos of inspiration, empowerment, and hope.   Bringing Hope to Life Through Touch At HopeSpring, we know that healing happens not just in medicine, but in moments of kindness, human touch, and community care. Our Massage Therapy Program is more than a service, it’s a mindful, caring gesture that speaks to the heart of holistic well-being.

HopeSpring’s Teen Support Group

Growing Stronger Together: The Benefits of Joining a Teen Support Group Being a teenager comes with enough challenges; school, friendships, family, and figuring out who you are. When cancer enters the picture, whether through your own diagnosis or that of someone you love, life can feel even more overwhelming. The emotions, questions, and experiences that come with cancer are often hard to share with peers who haven’t walked the same path. That’s why HopeSpring’s Teen Support Group exists: a safe, welcoming space where teens can connect with others who truly understand what it means to face cancer during these pivotal years.   Why a Teen Support Group Matters 1. A Place to Belong Teens affected by cancer often feel isolated or “different” from their friends. A support group provides a space where everyone shares a common bond, helping teens feel seen, heard, and accepted. 2. A Safe Space for Honest Conversations In the group, teens can share their worries, fears, and hopes openly without fear of judgment. Whether it’s about body image, school pressures, or the emotional weight of treatment, every voice matters. 3. Learning Coping Strategies From mindfulness to journaling to peer-to-peer advice, teens gain practical tools for handling stress, sadness, or uncertainty. These strategies can be carried into everyday life, offering strength beyond the group. 4. Building Confidence and Resilience Hearing “me too” from someone your own age can be life-changing. Teens leave the group with a stronger sense of resilience, knowing they are not defined by cancer, but strengthened by their journey. 5. Friendships That Uplift Support groups often blossom into friendships. Having peers who understand not only makes the tough days easier but also brings laughter, connection, and moments of joy back into a teen’s life.   A Group That Provides Hope At HopeSpring, our Teen Support Group reflects our mission to provide support to anyone affected by cancer. We know that when teens come together, they find strength not just in themselves, but in each other.

HopeSpring’s Art Therapy Program

Healing Through Creativity: The Benefits of Art Therapy   At HopeSpring, we believe healing transcends medicine—it happens in moments of expression, connection, and self-discovery. Our Art Therapy Program embodies our mission to support anyone affected by cancer, offering a safe space where art becomes a vessel for emotional relief and empowerment.   What Is HopeSpring’s Art Therapy Program? Our in-person Art Therapy sessions are held weekly at 54 Benton Street in Kitchener, led by our compassionate facilitator, Amy. Each 50-minute session offers a nurturing environment to explore feelings, reduce stress, and promote well-being through creative expression; no artistic experience necessary.   Why Art Therapy Matters — Backed by Research and Heart   1. Reduces Anxiety, Depression & Fatigue Art therapy is a proven complementary therapy that meaningfully lowers anxiety, depression, and fatigue in people facing cancer (PubMed, 2020). 2. Enhances Quality of Life Meta-analyses have shown that art therapy significantly boosts overall quality of life; adding emotional and psychological comfort during the cancer journey (PubMed, 2020). 3. Encourages Emotional Expression & Healing Art therapy isn’t about art skills—it’s about unlocking emotions. It offers a non-verbal outlet for complex feelings, giving individuals a new way to communicate and process their experiences (Bismarck Cancer Center, 2025). 4. Builds Self-Expression & Empowerment Creating art brings a sense of autonomy and accomplishment, especially powerful when other parts of life feel out of control. It can rekindle creativity, confidence, and emotional connection to oneself (Cancer Research UK, 2025). 5. Strengthens Community & Compassion Whether shared in group sessions or reflected upon personally, art creates connection. Participants often find comfort in knowing they are part of a caring community—where each story and stroke matter (Bismarck Cancer Center, 2025).   Why This Matters In a world often defined by treatments, Art Therapy offers a different kind of medicine; the medicine of creative expression, emotional insight, and community healing. At HopeSpring, each brushstroke is an act of courage, each session a moment of renewal.

Igniting Connection: Celebrating Volunteers at HopeSpring

Each year, National Volunteer Week 2026 offers an opportunity to pause and recognize the individuals who quietly, consistently, and compassionately show up for others. This year’s theme, “Ignite Volunteerism,” speaks to something powerful-the idea that one act of care can spark connection, hope, and lasting change across an entire community. At HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre, we see that spark every single day. Shawn Halwatzki, volunteer and HopeSpring Board President, “during National Volunteer Week 2026, we pause with deep gratitude to recognize the extraordinary individuals who make HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre what it is today-you, our volunteers, our donors, our community… our Hopesters. Guided by hope. Grounded in community. Powered by compassion. Every Cancer. Every Stage. Everyone. These are not just words-they are brought to life through your actions each and every day.” The Heart of HopeSpring A cancer diagnosis can feel sudden and isolating. In those moments, connection becomes everything. Volunteers help create spaces where individuals don’t have to explain, filter, or carry their experiences alone. “I have been a HopeSpring volunteer wig consultant for just over a year. Being able to find just the right wig and put a smile on a member’s face makes me smile as well. It’s an amazing privilege that I get to do what I do for such a wonderful organization” ~ Janine Fries, Volunteer Wig Consultant As one HopeSpring member shared: “Because women and men, anybody with cancer, needs to make those connections. Because, you know, you’re blindsided by cancer. Cancer is a life-altering illness, and the average person just doesn’t get it. Whereas when you’re in a group with other people with cancer, they get it. You don’t have to weigh your words. You don’t have to think about what you’re saying. It’s okay, and I think that’s wonderful.” `Anonymous HopeSpring Member This sense of understanding-of simply being “gotten” is often made possible by volunteers who hold space, facilitate programs, and offer compassion without judgment. Creating Spaces for Healing Volunteers are often the first friendly face, the steady presence in a support group, or the quiet encouragement someone didn’t know they needed. Another member reflected on their experience in a HopeSpring program: “You know, like I would just went there and cried and cried and cried… and she helped me get perspective. And then I joined the women’s support group… there were 16 of us… and we stayed in touch. You guys are awesome.”~Anonymous HopeSpring Member These moments-raw, real, and deeply human-are at the core of what HopeSpring offers. Volunteers help transform difficult days into shared experiences, where healing begins through connection. Why Volunteerism Matters More Than Ever Across Canada, organizations are feeling the impact of what some are calling a “volunteer void.” And yet, the need has never been greater. People are more likely to volunteer when they feel connected to a cause-when they see the direct impact of their time and energy. At HopeSpring, that impact is immediate and meaningful. Volunteering doesn’t just support others-it also supports the volunteer. Research from organizations like Mayo Clinic Health System and Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto highlights the wide-reaching benefits: Improved mood and reduced stress A stronger sense of purpose and self-worth Decreased feelings of loneliness and isolation Better physical health and overall well-being Opportunities to build relationships and develop new skills In short, volunteering is a powerful exchange-it gives as much as it receives. Gloria Shoon, HopeSpring Board Member and dedicated volunteer, knows firsthand what it means to give back. Drawing from her own cancer journey, she shared how volunteerism has shaped both her healing and her sense of purpose: Q – Why is it important to you to volunteer and what benefits do you realize personally? A – Volunteering allows me to share all the many tools that have assisted me in my own breast cancer journey with others.  I believe that it is in giving that we receive – and volunteering is the perfect opportunity to do just that!!! Q – Where do you see the impacts in HopeSpring of volunteerism and why did you choose HopeSpring? A – All our programs provide each member with the opportunity to assist in their own personal healing journey.   Healthy bodies, mind and spirit leads to a healthy community. HopeSpring provides services to anyone with any type of cancer in my community and therefore it was a natural choice to choose HopeSpring – by choosing HopeSpring I am choosing my Community!!! Igniting a More Compassionate Community Today’s volunteers, particularly younger generations, are drawn to ideas like community care and collective impact. They want to be part of something meaningful-something that makes a difference. HopeSpring is exactly that kind of place. Every conversation, every support group, every program is strengthened by volunteers who choose to show up. They are the reason someone feels less alone. The reason someone finds the courage to share. The reason hope continues to grow. A Heartfelt Thank You To every HopeSpring volunteer and donors-past and present-thank you. Thank you for your time, your empathy, and your unwavering commitment to those navigating cancer. You are the spark behind so many moments of connection and healing. “This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate you-not just for what you do, but for the way you make people feel. You are the reason HopeSpring continues to grow, adapt, and reach further than ever before. You are the reason we can say with confidence that no matter who someone is, where they come from, or what they are facing-there is a place for them here. From all of us at HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre, thank you for your time, your compassion, your generosity, and your unwavering belief in the power of community. To our Hopesters-you don’t just support HopeSpring. You are HopeSpring.”~Shawn Hlowatzki Interested in Getting Involved? If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, there’s no better time to start.
