How can art therapy help me?
For individuals living with cancer
To many, receiving a cancer diagnosis is a life-altering experience that touches every part of a person’s body, mind, and spirit. Art therapy provides a compassionate, adaptable space where people can begin to process the many emotions that come with this journey, from fear and grief to anger and hope. For those living with cancer, making art can ease anxiety, help restore a feeling of control, and even open up moments to reconnect with parts of themselves that might feel lost or hidden by illness. Many people also use creative expression to build a legacy creating meaningful pieces which capture their experiences, express love, or leave lasting messages for family and friends. This process can help individuals see themselves as more than their illness, celebrate their life stories, and find a feeling of peace or purpose during difficult times.
For Caregivers
Art therapy can be a means of comfort and support for caregivers. The emotional pressure of caring for someone with cancer can be heavy, often bringing exhaustion, guilt, or a sense of being overwhelmed. Through art, caregivers are given space to care for themselves, work through difficult feelings, and discover new ways to cope. This creative process can help caregivers reconnect with their own identity, discover moments of relaxation, and build resilience to continue supporting their loved ones while tending to their own needs. Group art therapy sessions may also offer a feeling of community and mutual insight among caregivers who share similar experiences.

Amy Stickney (She/her)
Art Psychotherapy Student
I was born and raised in Waterloo and feel a strong connection to this community. My interest in art therapy comes from a genuine desire to give back and support individuals and families through difficult and uncertain times.
Before beginning my training, I worked as a makeup artist in both retail and freelance settings. That work taught me how to build trust quickly, listen closely, and create spaces where people feel comfortable being themselves.
In recent years, I transitioned into working within the school system, supporting students across a wide range of ages, abilities, and learning needs. This experience has deepened my understanding of how differently people process the world around them, and how important it is to meet each person with flexibility, patience, and care. It has also reinforced how meaningful it can be to offer consistent support, especially during times when things may feel overwhelming or uncertain.
Becoming a mother has further shaped how I view this work. It has strengthened my belief in the importance of community, connection, and creating spaces where people feel supported, not alone.
My approach is warm, honest, and non-judgmental. You don’t need to have any artistic experience to benefit from art therapy only a willingness to explore. Sessions are guided by your needs and can offer a way to process emotions, reduce stress, and make sense of difficult experiences. I also bring a sense of humour into the space when it feels appropriate, as it can support healing and emotional expression.
My goal is to provide a supportive, creative space where you can show up as you are and move at your own pace.
